FAQ
NELA – which stands for New Language Academy – is an online language school with native-speaking, certified language teachers.
Currently you can learn English, Business English, Spanish and German with NELA.
For things to work smoothly, you should briefly consider which device you want to use to sign up for live lessons. Do you receive the NELA e-mails on the device of your choice? If yes, then it’s simple:

This is a digital waiting room. You don’t have to do anything. As soon as your teacher “lets you in” to the virtual classroom, you’ll be automatically redirected. 👩🏫 Then the lesson can start right away.

The most important difference is:

The NELA web version is for your computer.
You can download the NELA app for free from the App Store or Google Play Store.
You can access the NELA web version by logging in on a computer (not on your mobile phone) at www.nel.academy with your account data.
In both versions you will find your learning chat, the learning materials and the customer service chat.
The vocabulary trainer is only available in the app.
You can only cancel in the web version on your computer.
You need a smartphone, tablet, or computer with a microphone and webcam, a stable internet connection, and the free Zoom video conferencing app. For your tablet or smartphone, download Zoom from your app store for free. For your computer, you can download the Zoom software (Zoom client for meetings) for free from the following website: https://zoom.us/download#client_4meeting
To download the NELA app to your smartphone or tablet, go to your app store, search for “NELA – New Language Academy,” download it for free and you’re ready to go.
After each successfully completed level, you will receive a language certificate that certifies your language level according to the “Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR)”.
At NELA we have native teachers who are qualified and experienced in brain-friendly teaching. They know how to give you feedback on weak points and pronunciation and put a lot of emphasis on keeping you motivated. Best of all, you get a personal teacher who teaches you live using video conferencing and practices with you every day in your private learning chat.
Yes, you can cancel on a monthly basis.
For example, if you booked your subscription on March 12, 2023, at 11:30 a.m., you can cancel it until April 12, 2023, at 11:29 a.m.
If you do not cancel, your monthly subscription will automatically be extended by another month. Also see our terms and conditions.
Yes, you can test NELA for free for seven days. During this free trial period, you can chat with your teacher every day on the NELA app and view the learning material. You can also book a 25-minute live lesson using video conference for free during the seven days. After the seven-day trial period, you will be charged for the subscription. If you cancel before the end of the trial period, you pay nothing. See also our terms and conditions.
Your booked subscription will be charged monthly by credit card, direct debit or PayPal. All major credit cards such as Visa, Mastercard and American Express are accepted. See also our terms and conditions.
You can cancel your subscription with a few clicks:
- Log in to your account on the NELA website (on a computer, not on your mobile phone)
- In the menu, click on “Settings” and then on “My subscription”
- Click on the “Cancel payment” button
The message “This subscription has been cancelled” will appear as confirmation of cancellation.

You don’t cram, you discover. Your brain really enjoys learning this way. It’s brain-friendly learning and therefore extremely successful. With NELA you learn with all your senses: seeing, hearing, feeling. You immerse yourself in stories, listen to different people speak and are prepared to speak yourself. Language comes from speaking. And that’s exactly what your language teacher prepares you for in your private learning chat in the NELA app. He will train you to speak so that you will be ready for your first real conversation using video conferencing. You will go through the following stages:
- You watch a video with a short story from everyday life as often as you like. Then you practice with your teacher what you learned in the video.
- You listen to the audio of the story to improve your listening comprehension. Again, your teacher will send you exercises and feedback.
- The grammar in the story is explained to you. Then you practice using it in different situations.
- You meet with your teacher for a 25-minute live lesson using video conferencing. During the conversation you notice how you can already apply all that you have learned.
- Your language teacher gives you direct feedback and further targeted exercises to help you successfully complete the lesson.
Live lessons take place over video conferencing. Our language teachers use the user-friendly, free version of Zoom for this purpose. All you need is a computer with a microphone and webcam, or an up-to-date tablet or smartphone. For your tablet or smartphone, download Zoom from your app store for free. It’s very simple: When you register, you tell us about your previous knowledge. Your language teacher will quickly find out if you are already better than you think and will then adjust the level immediately and free of charge. You can also take the free online placement test. Afterwards, you will receive a recommendation as to which level is best for you.
The NELA method is successful because you learn the way your brain wants to. Unlike other language schools, you are not left on your own before and after your live lessons. Your personal language teacher prepares you to speak in your live lessons so that these are more effective and successful. You will become confident in speaking the language faster.
Flexibility and effectiveness are other differences. With NELA, you can learn anytime, from anywhere, and most importantly, every day – in bite-sized chunks. In your private learning chat, you can practice, chat and talk with your language teacher every day. It’s fun and you’ll make fast progress – because it’s brain-friendly.
Even after the first week, you will notice how the daily practice helps you progress. With each live lesson over videoconference, you will become more confident in your pronunciation and eventually the language will become second nature to you, as long as you keep focused on your goal.
You choose your subscription, register and book your first, free live lesson.
Then you can start right away to prepare for the live lessons:
You click on “Start course now” and enter your learning chat. Watch the videos. Look at the learning materials. Then you can say hello to your teacher at the bottom of the chat.
Your teacher will answer you and send you the first exercises for your lesson. Completing the exercises will prepare you for your first live lesson.
By the way, your course works best with the NELA app on your phone. You can download the app for free from the App Store or the Google Play Store. As soon as you have logged in, you will enter your learning chat.
With NELA Power (12x live lessons per month plus daily exercises in the app) you need about 4 months to finish a level.
With NELA Pro (8x live lessons per month plus daily exercises in the app) you need about 6 months to finish a level.
With NELA Basic (4x live lessons per month plus daily exercises in the app) you need about 8 months to finish a level.
Usually the fear of making mistakes is behind this. Or maybe you are particularly shy. Both are common. That’s why you are in contact with your language teacher every day. You chat and practice together and you get to know him better. Soon it feels more like friendship, and you lose your fear of making mistakes. A mistake? You just laugh about it!
